Local attitude towards dogs - in a different light

I feel it's important to discuss the dogs of Malaysia because like anywhere else in the world, cruelty against animals is rampant here. By discussing specifically dogs, is a start and more so because dogs are animals that I know better than any other animal out there. For starters, please visit this website http://www.spca.org.my/v51/. This website is on Malaysia's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

My entries should be different from any out there because it would be accounts of cruelty to dogs from an actual Malaysian. These are first hand accounts. Apart from simply jotting down what actually happens to dogs in Malaysia, I will try to include as much as I can on anything and everything local - on the "Anjing Kampung".

GAYA STREET

Gaya Street is a street whereby every sunday morning, a marketplace is set up there. Aside from local crafts and all kinds of interesting things sold, animals are also sold there, including puppies and dogs. Most of them are mixed breeds that are sold at below market prices of dog breeders. These canines are pretty to look at and cute. Though the horror behind it is the conditions that these animals are kept in. These dogs are squashed into small cages and are kept that way until someone comes along and buys them.

DOG MEAT

There are also those who consume dog meat. I am not one to judge but it is the method of acquiring the meat that bothers me. When I was a little girl I saw on a few occasions how the dogs were battered, badgered, traumatized and poured with boiling scalding water before being cooked for human consumption. On one occasion, this is what exactly happened.

A group of men were called to take away a dog because it was being a nuisance and terror to the neighbourhood. The way these guys got a hold of the dog was by surrounding it. Each of the men held something hard to wack the dog with. The poor dog was trying to escape for dear life as it obviously sensed its imminent doom. Once one of the men managed to strike a sickeningly painful blow to the dog's head, the other men joined in on beating the dog till it could barely move. When it finally was weak enough to be thrown into a sack, I could see the sack getting wet with the dog's pee. That was indicative of how much agony it was enduring. The men then walked away with the dog and needless to say, the dog would be dog soup by that evening.

MISCONSTRUED LOVE

One of my friends who was part of the SPCA told me a most unfortunate tale of a man and his 2 Doberman. This man had recently at the time purchased 2 Doberman and was very proud of the fact. Everytime they met, the man would brag about how great his dogs were. He was obviously very proud of them. About a year later, my friend was invited to this guy's house to view the dogs. Upon arriving, the man told my friend how awesome it was that his Doberman were vegetarian. They never ate meat but only fruits and vegetables. Wanting to demonstrate, the man took out a huge watermelon and split it in half and then threw it for his dogs to "fetch". The dogs couldn't have run any faster and when they finally got to the watermelons, were eating it ravenously.

It's sad how the owner never realized how skinny and underfed his dogs looked. Lucky for the dogs, my friend took immediate action as soon as the owner grew tired of having the dogs and decided to put them up for adoption.
