It's interesting how there's so much one doesn't know about their own country. All this while Malaysians have been using the term "anjing kampung" to refer to their local dogs. Directly translated, "anjing kampung" means village dog. But for want of a better fit to the understanding of the concept, it is best translated as "local dog". Local dog meaning any type of dog that resembles a certain pedigree (*pedigree meaning family tree) look of a certain short haired, medium sized dog. Below are pictures of local Malaysian puppies.

One day I decided to google "anjing kampung" on a sudden whim and I stumbled upon TELOMIAN DOG on the internet. Here's where everything took an interesting turn for me.

If anyone's heard of the Telomian dog, they are actually a primitve breed originating from Malaysia. They were discovered in 1963 by one Dr. Orville Elliot, an anthropologist who then brought a pair to the United States. In 1970, The Telomian Dog Club was established in the United States. This dog got its name from The Telom River of Pahang, Malaysia where Dr. Elliot first found these dogs.

WHAT THE TELOMIAN LOOKS LIKE:

The Telomian is a small breed with an elongated back standing at 15-18 inches tall and weighing at 18-28lbs. This dog has a blue tongue just like the Chow Chow. The Telomian looks something like a Basenji and some believe that they are the missing link between the Basenji and the Dingo.

THE USE OF THE TELOMIAN:

Back in the day, The Telomians were bred by the Orang Asli (an aboriginal tribe of Malaysia) as pets, hunting vermin and watchdogs during the night. Due to the Orang Asli's stilt houses, these dogs developed a rare climbing ability.

See below for pictures of Telomian dogs.
